onday
is Labor Day - and marks our arrival in Glacier Bay just after breakfast
- we have been steaming all night, having departed Juneau just before
sunset. We'll be visiting two glaciers today and snapping photos. The
sounds of the cracking of the ice is quite loud and almost constant as
the glaciers surrender their centuries-old ice to the sea.
We'll be served hot coffee with brandy, split-pea
soup (Wynne's favorite), and be treated to an exhibition by the Polar
Bear Club, who will bravely take their dip in the heated pool on the rear
sundeck. It will be a full day of enjoying the Alaska landscape in the
low Forties as evidenced by Wynne's keeping her hands up in her coat sleeves.
And several Floridians will be heard saying,
"I can actually see my breath" over and over again. It was excitiing
to see up close some glaciers like the ones we'd seen from the air on
our way to Taku.
